Project Description
Overview
Dwelling at Pamburana is situated in the calm suburbs just a short distance from Matara, on the fringes of 7.5 perches of
land. The residence encompasses an 1185 sqft footprint. The total gross area of the building stands at an impressive 2215
sqft. The client's primary objective was straightforward—to create a haven where they could unwind after a day's work.
In response to this, the architect intended to craft an interior space that seamlessly merged with the limited indoor and
outdoor areas. This deliberate decision amplified the significance of the interior, transforming it into a focal point that
radiates a sense of serenity. The careful selection of colors and materials played a pivotal role in creating a soothing
ambiance, enhancing the overall living experience.
Concept
Conceptually, the guiding principle behind the design is encapsulated in the word "unwind." Every aspect of the dwelling,
from the layout to the choice of colors and materials, is meticulously aligned with the idea of providing a space where
residents can relax and revive.
Developments of the study
The idea was to form a white color base ambiance to maximize the space and create a cool atmosphere within. Numerous
sample works were executed to attain the optimal interior ambiance. The key revelation from this venture was that a white
color scheme should not stand alone; rather, it should be complemented by a soft tone of aligned color to create a
moderately pleasing atmosphere. The successful combination of white with yellow ocher emerged as a particularly effective
pairing, producing one of the coolest color ambiances. This exercise demonstrated that thoughtful integration of colors can
significantly impact and enhance the overall aesthetic and feel of interior spaces.
A predominant feature involves illuminating most spaces with an indirect lighting system, strategically chosen to elevate the
interior ambiance. Moreover, careful attention was given to the spatial behavior under artificial lighting, a critical factor in
realizing the intended concept.
A sustainable approach to the selection of materiality and execution of work
The project successfully embraced a sustainable approach by prioritizing materials with low maintenance requirements.
Notably, the choice of floor tiles was strategically made for easy upkeep.
The veneer finish applied to the walls played a dual role, not only offering an aesthetically pleasing appearance but also
effectively camouflaging dirt, thereby ensuring maximum resistance to staining. existing masonry walls for fixed veneer,
eliminating the need for putty or paint finishes in the majority of wall areas. This additional veneer layer serves to minimize
heat gain effectively.
The ceiling, ornamented with a white-finished false ceiling, is strategically positioned to maximize the perception of
spaciousness while leveraging the ceiling edges to incorporate discreet cove lights. The ceiling, recognized as the least
impactful on the functionality, was intentionally left with a white finish. Additionally, this approach facilitated the
manipulation of light levels within the space, optimizing the use of natural daylight during the daytime and contributing to a
more sustainable and energy-efficient design for this project.
